Ryan Schaaf - Biography


Ryan Schaaf is an Assistant Professor of Technology at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and a Faculty Associate for the
Johns Hopkins University School of EducationGraduate Program. He graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Education in 1999 from Towson University in Elementary Education. He started teaching in 1999 for the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) in Maryland. From the span of 1999 to 2007, Ryan was a third grade teacher and instructional leader for Clarksville Elementary School. During the 2003-2004 year, the third grade team at Clarksville Elementary boasted the highest Maryland State Assessment scores for Reading and Math in the entire county. In 2007, Ryan was nominated for the Howard County Teacher of the Year.

Ryan's real affinity lies in incorporating technology into classroom instruction. In 2005, Ryan Schaaf began the Master's Program at Johns Hopkins University for a degree in Instructional Technology. During his first semester, Ryan participated in the development of the FAQ section for the SAKAI project, a new open-source Learning Management System (LMS). Ryan continued his expertise with Learning Management Systems when he interned with Johns Hopkins University and BotKnowledgeto create multimedia tutorials instructing faculty using the Blackboard LMS. After graduation, Ryan decided to teach at Johns Hopkins as a faculty member for the School of Education.
Meanwhile, Ryan pursued a new venture while working for Howard County. A unique decision by the school system created a technology teacher position for each elementary school. Ryan used his experience in instructional technology pedagogy to help create the technology essential curriculum, develop assessments, and mentor new technology teachers.

Ryan continues to work at Johns Hopkins University, teaching courses in their Technology for Educator's program. Some of the courses included: Integrating Media into a Standards-Based Curriculum, Introduction to Hardware and Operating Systems for Schools and Organizations, Emerging Issues in Instructional Technology, Technology and the New Science of Learning, and Introduction to Gaming and Media Design. In the spring of 2010, Ryan accepted a full-time faculty position at Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Education as Assistant Professor of Technology.
